The former Dutch Antilles are located north of Venzuela in the Caribbean Sea. This island group also included Curacao, whose capital is Willemstad with a population of 60,000. Located in the south of the island, it has a natural harbor.
At first the island was conquered by the Spaniards and the aborigines were abducted as slaves. It was not until the 17th century that the island became Dutch. The Netherlands Antilles Association was dissolved on October 10, 2010.
However, the port was always a great trade center for slaves from Africa. Since the 20th century, it has been important to the company Shell and the petroleum trade, but today most of the inhabitants live from tourism.
The city center of Willemstad is a UNESCO world cultural heritage.
