The northern Chinese city of Tianjin is located in the southeast of Beijing. Since the 13th century the former fishing village located on the Grand Canal has been a commercial city and was of importance for the imperial court in Beijing as grain storage. After Shanghaib, Tianjin is today with its ocean port Tianjin Xingang the most important coastal metropolis of China. The city is an industrial center, transportation hub and cultural center of the region. The administrative area of Tianjin, with its 10 million inhabitants is not a continuous urban area, but due to the rural settlement structure rather comparable with a small province.

Tianjin is characterized by an almost unmanageable cultural offer. The city hosts numerous theater, opera and concert halls, such as the People's Art Theater, which presents contemporary and classical pieces, the Opera and Dance Drama Theater whose repertoire include classical opera and dance performances and the Guangdong-Gilden House, a wooden structure built at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) where Peking operas are performed. The Art Museum of the city displays an interesting collection of paintings, dragons and Chinese New Year prints. One of the main attractions of Tianjin is also the Temple of the Great Compassion (Da Bei Yuan). Its oldest part was built in 1669 by Emperor Kangxi. The structure destroyed in 1976 by an earthquake was rebuilt according to old plans. The oldest building in Tianjin is the palace of the sky goddess (Tianhou Gong), which was founded in 1326 in the time of the Yuan Dynasty and expanded under the following dynasties. Since the old town of Tianjin was formerly divided strictly according to national belonging, each part has preserved a piece of its character until today. Northwest of the central station the old Chinatown was located. The downtown area south of the river is characterized by the unmistakable chateaux of the the French Concession and east of it still stand the mansions of the British.
