St. George´s, Grenada / Caribbean

At the entrance to the harbor of St. George's for over two centuries an old French fort has keept watch. The port itself is not much older, and the relatively narrow breakthrough came only after a natural disaster. The present port bay lying behind the coastal hills stretches far to the left and offers even large ships good natural protection against hurricanes.
A prosperous, cozy capital with only 35,000 inhabitants. It is also the center and the seat of government of the island nation. The island is an independent state since 1974. Some of the smaller islands to the north still belong to it.

It is nice to stroll here through the streets that partly lead quite steeply up and down. The island has a beautiful vegetation, the air is filled with the fragrance of exotic spices. Grenada is the world's second largest exporter of nutmeg.
In the crater of the volcano Etang there is a beautiful lake.
From the old French fort you are offered a beautiful view down to the capital. Three other large fortifications are located on the hills surrounding the city. Grenada was (as well as other Lesser Antilles Islands) long fought over between England and France and thus changed the rule so many times. Ultimately, the island became then British. English is therefore today's official language. However, colloquial language is often the 'patois', a Creole-French dialect.
