Santarem is a city with about 200,000 inhabitants in northern Brazil. The port is one of the most important export ports for soybean from the state of Mato Grosso. The ancient village of Tupaius was named Santarèm in 1758. Franciso Xavier de Medonca Furtado, governor of the state of Parà, dreamed to transform the Amazon into a new Portugal, and changed the original Indian names of the villages and settlements into Portuguese villages and towns. The inhabitants today live on fishing, cattle breeding and the production of ceramic articles. Even rubber trade still plays a minor role.
