Punta Arenas is located in the south of Chile on the Magellan Strait. The city has more than 100,000 inhabitants and was founded in the 19th century as a convict colony. It eventually turned into a port town, when coal was discovered and sheep were introduced. But the great upswing came with the gold rush. So far the culture of the city is characterized by various influences, from Portugal and England.

The Antarctic National Park Torres del Paine, which is in the vicinity, and the numerous pinguin colonies are worth a visit.
Otherwise, the city center is very exciting with the Salesian Church. There are also some museums, e.g. about the city history of the Avenida Bulnes, and a fortress, the Fort Bulnes. A must is the Cerra La Cruz, a mountain that offers excellent views of the city and the Magellan Strait.
