Philipsburg, St.Maarten (Lesser Antilles) / Caribbean
Philipsburg is located on the island of St. Maarten, which belongs to the small Antilles and is under the administration of the Netherlands. The island consists of the southern part of St. Marteen and the northern French part of St. Martin.
The city was founded in the 18th century by the Scottish sailor John Philips. The city is today as lively as ever.
There are two main streets, Front Street and Back Street. On Front Street are a lot of small shops and pretty houses in the typical Antillian style, pastel colors with small verandas. Worth seeing here is the court building and the local History Museum, The city also offers a variety of restaurants, bars and other entertainment options.
Nearby is the 17th century Fort Amsterdam, once built by Spanish conquerors. And if you want to relax from the sightseeing stress, you can also relax, swim, snorkel, dive, dolphin or hike across the island, maybe in the Wilson Historical and Cultural Parc or simply through the wonderful nature.
