The Island Nosy Bé ("Big Island") is located about 40 km off the northwest coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It is also called perfume island because here grow lots of aromatic plants such as vanilla, cloves and ylang-ylang. Nosy Bé is the main island of the archipelago and is surrounded by the islands of Nosy Komba, Nosy Mitsio and Nosy Tanikely. The 50,000 residents of Nosy Bé belong to one of the 18 ethnic groups in Madagascar, the Sakalava ("People of the Valley"). Main industry is fishing and tourism.
Cruise offers to the port Nosy Bé / Madagascar
On the bustling market of Hell-Ville, the capital of Nosy Bés, the typical spices (pepper, vanilla, clove), ylang-ylang essence and coffee are sold. Djamandjary, the second largest city on Nosy Bé is known for its sugar and rum factory (Sirama). Also worth seeing are the igloo-shaped houses made of concrete, which once served the factory workers as protection against cyclones and wildfires that threatened the burning of sugar cane plantations. The summit of the 329-m-high Mont Passot offers a fascinating view of the island with its tropical picturesque landscape, the palm-fringed beaches and offshore islands.
