Kralendijk is the capital of the island of Bonaire, which belongs alongside Aruba and Curacao to the ABC islands of the former Netherlands Antilles.
Bonaire is the second largest of the ABC islands. The total area is 288 square kilometers, the population about 15,000. It was first settled by the "Caiquetos" a tribe of the Arawak, they gave the island its name "Bonay" which means "deep country". The first Europeans arrived in 1499 under Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci on the island and took them for Spain in possession. In 1633 the Dutch conquered it for the first time, over the years the tenure changed several times, ultimately with the Treaty of Paris in 1816, it was finally attributed to the Netherlands. On October 10, 2010 the union of the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved.
