Kos, Dodekanes / Greece

Kos is the third largest island in the Dodecanese. From Kos town in the east to Kefalos in the west there are about 40km. The widest part of the island is about 10 km. The total area is 290 square kilometers. Kos is 3.5 km away from the Turkish mainland. The next Turkish place is Bodrum. Kos was in antiquity already well known and famous. This was due to the Greek wines that were grown on the island and deliver  good qualities even today.
Kos was the birth island of Hippocrates and had a famous hospital and medical college. Kos is virtually the birthplace of medicine. According to the different Greek tribes the Romans, after the disintegration of the Roman Empire Byzantium, then the Johannites who built the still preserved fort in Kos Town. It continues with the Turks. The have lost the island in 1912 to the Italians. During WW2 came the Germans, then the English and only since 1948 Kos is one of Greece arrived.
Since the 80s, Kos has become one of the most popular holiday islands.

Kos is the largest town on the island. There are most of the shops and tavernas. Apart from the usual tourist shops there you can find all the shops that you need. The other places are rather small and there are next to taverns and hotels only some minimarkets. Interesting in Kos are the ancient city, the Johanniter Castle with the plane trees of Hippocrates.
