Kolkata (Calcutta) / India

Calcutta, located on the River Hooghly, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. With its about 5 million inhabitants, Calcutta is now the fourth largest city in the country. In 1495 a fishing village called Kalikata was first documented. The name means "Black Gate" or "Gate of the goddess Kali." One of the most famous citizens of the city was without doubt Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997), who was honored in 1979 for her ministry with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Calcutta offers as intellectual and artistic center innumerable cultural treasures. The Indian Museum that has its headquarters here with its exhibits of art and natural history is the oldest and largest in the country. Landmark of the city is the Victoria Memorial. This imposing white marble building, completed in 1921 and named after Queen Victoria, was commissioned by the then Foreign Secretary Lord George Nathaniel Curzon in order to erect a monument to the heyday of the British Empire. Also the famous Howrah Bridge, built in 1943, has become a hallmark of the city. With its 457.5 meters in a single span it is today one of the longest cantilever bridges worldwide. Khaligat, Calcutta's most important temple, was built in 1809 and is dedicated to goddess Kali. It is today one of the most important pilgrimage centers of Hinduism.
