Cochin is located in Kerala in the southwest of the Indian subcontinent on the Arabian Sea. The city has, after Bombay, the second largest port in the country, about 4.5 million inhabitants, but still corners where you forget that you are in a major city. Cochin gained wealth in past centuries by exporting spices to Europe. The natural harbor of Cochin was founded only in the 14th century through a flood in the lagoon landscape. In 1929 started the expansion of the port. The town itself actually consists of two parts, Ernakulum on the mainland and Cochin, which consists of several islands.

The history of Cochin is quite long - Arabs, Chinese, Dutch and British gave here, so to speak, the jack in hand and shaped the city. A part of the colonial legacy is the Bolghatty Palace (built) in 1557, which is also called Dutch Palace. The Jewish Quarter in Mattancherry with its synagogue, the many small shops, the Spice Bazaar and the winding streets are also worth a visit. In Fort Cochin one can imagine the St. Francis Church from 1503 - it is the oldest church in India. Nearby one should admire the Chinese fishing nets - a worthwhile destination for photographers and romantics.
A must is a boat trip through the backwaters - sweet water channels that run through the hinterland of Kerala, past small villages and coconut plantations. Kerala ultimately means translated "the land of the coconut palm." A special highlight: a visit to a Kathalaki performance, a traditional dance, which can only be found in Kerala.
Other attractions: "Dutch Palace, Santa Cruz Basilica and the Hill Palace Museum.
