Klaipeda (Memel) / Lithuania

Klaipeda is located on the Lithuanian coast where the Curonian Lagoon is connected to the Baltic Sea. The city was founded in 1252, when the Livonian Order occupied the coastal areas of the Baltic and built at the mouth of the Dane River a wooden fortress which was called Memelburg. Across centuries the city was dominated by the Teutonic Knights, the monarchy of Prussia and the German Reich. From 1629 to 1635 it was occupied by the Swedes, and from 1757 to 1762 by the Russians. In 1923  the ethnic Baltic countries,i.e. the territory of Klaipeda became part of Lithuania.Currently Klaipeda with a population of 205,000 inhabitants is the third largest city in Lithuania and one of the most important cities in the republic with an ice-free port.

The great treasures of Klaipeda are the Giruliai Forest, Parks,10-km-long beautiful sandy beaches as well as the famous Curonian Spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic sea and beyond that the Maritime Museum and Aquarium with a Dolphinarium as well as the sculpture Park and the Palace of Art Exhibitions.
