The Portuguese city of Horta is located on the southeast shore of the island of Faial belonging to the Azores. The city has about 6,500 inhabitants and is the administrative center of the same-named Horta county. The colonization of Faial began already around 1460. In the 18th century Horta was important as a port. The old port of the city was in the bay of Porto Pim, protected by the two mountains Monte Queimado and Monte da Guia. In 1876 began the construction of today's harbor where now also larger steamships can dock. Today Horta is the third largest fishing port of the Azores.
