Ho Chi Minh City got this name in 1976 after North and South Vietnam were reunified. It was named after Ho Chi Minh ("the Enlightened One"), a Vietnamese revolutionary and politician, who in 1945 proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and later took over the leadership of the country as a state and prime minister. Abroad, the city is still known by its old name: Saigon. With about 3.5 million inhabitants it is the largest city in Vietnam. It lies just north of the Mekong Delta, on the west bank of the Saigon River. Saigon was probably founded between the 1st and 6th century as a fishing village surrounded by marshland by a Khmer people and called Prei Nokor ("forest village"). Until the 17th century the city became a major trading center on the Mekong. Since 1986, Ho Chi Minh City has developing rapidly as financial and economic center of Vietnam.

Interesting is, among other things, the Reunification Palace. Built in the 60s of the 20th century, it was the first Presidential Palace of South Vietnam. Today it houses a museum and is occasionally used for state receptions. Even more interesting museums the city has to offer: the War Victims Museum, the Revolution Museum and the Saigon Museum. The Jade Pagoda is the most colorful of its kind in Saigon. In 1909 it was built by the Cantonese congregation in the city. Venerated here are several Taoist and Buddhist deities. It is wonderfully decorated with statues and carvings of gods and heroes Asian characters. The Ben Thanh Market built in 1914 and renovated in 1986 is one of the landmarks of the old Saigon. Today it is a large market hall for clothing, dried food, electronics and souvenirs. The neo-Romanesque Notre-Dame Cathedral (1877 - 1883) built of brick is one of the most important colonial buildings of Saigon and the center of the Catholic Church in South Vietnam.
