In Halong Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, in northern Vietnam are on an area of 1,500 square kilometers, more than 3,000 small islands with a height between 5 and 200 meters. An old myth has it that a dragon was said to be responsible for their formation. Hence the name "Ha Long", which means "of descending dragon". Scientists dated the emergence of this magnificent island scenery to the last ice age, when the south-western Chinese limestone plateau sank. In 1994, UNESCO declared the bay a world cultural heritage site. The largest island with 354 square kilometers, is Cat Ba. The approximately 12,000 inhabitants live mainly from fishing, oyster farming and tourism. The bay ecame famous, among others through the movie "James Bond - Tomorrow Never Dies" in 1997.

Tides and weather have dug numerous caves and caverns in the rock inside which true artworks of stalagmites and stalactites have formed. Many of the small islands are green, on the largest one can partly even find a dense jungle landscape. The greatest elevation is about 330 meters. In the 1970s and 1980s this was the starting point of many so-called "boat people".
