Esperance is a town with about 10,000 inhabitants located on the south coast of the Australian state of Western Australia. The citys history began in 1627, when the Dutch vessel Guild Zeepaard passed by the local coastline. According to all presumptions, in 1792 French explorers were for the first time at the site of the present town when they went offboard as they sought refuge from a storm. The city was named after their ship L'Espérance ("Hope"). In the following years, whalers, pastors and miners settled there, who participated in the more northerly mines and the great gold rush. Today Esperance lives of fishing, agriculture and tourism.
