The beautiful harbor town of Cobh is located on an island in Cork Harbour. With the main island connected only by a causewayCobh is an important part of Irish history. From here, because of the famine between 1848 and 1850 two and a half million emigrants left for Ireland. Queenstown was port of call for the great ocean liners that visited the port up to the 50s of the 19th century. The port of Cobh was then the safest and largest port in Europe. This the Titanic stopped in 1912 for two hours for the last time before the maiden voyage across the Atlantic . The former office of the White Star Line, has been partly reconstructed and now serves as a restaurant. Cobh was also the destination of the "Lusitania", a steamboat of the Cunard Line, which was sunk on May 7, 1915, shortly before reaching the Irish coast by the German submarine U20. A monument in the center commemorates the victims. Worthwhile: a harbor cruise that also includes the two islands Haulbowline and Spike Island.
