Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) / Madagascar

Antsiranana (formerly Diego Suarez) is located north of the African Atlantic island of Madagascar. The city has approximately 80,000 residents. Madagascar was first occupied by the Portuguese in the 19th century. But ultimately subordinated to the French protectorate. France built the city's harbor strong. With the independence of Madagascar in 1960 the port lost its importance and now serves mainly for tourist navigation.

The town is surrounded by a mountain range, which is often climbed by visitors to the city. Among them is the most popular mountain of Amber Mountain, though sometimes the Ankarana National Park is visited.
But the city itself has its charm with its colonial architecture such as the covered market and the former Hotel de la Marine. Also the markets are very much alive and well worth a visit, there are plenty of shops and food stalls.
For a beach trip Ramena is recommended, because along the way you will pass beautiful lookouts and you even ride through a beautiful landscape with rich wildlife.
