The municipality is made up of the old town of Edam and the touristic Volendam, located 3 kilometers further south. Volendam once originated as a suburb of Edam. Until 1920 it was a simple fishing village. Whaling is said to have led some people and influences from the Basque country to Volendam in the 16th century. At the beginning of the 20th century painters and tourists discovered the remote and original Volendam. Tourism brought many new jobs to the town.

Volendam, with its costumes, its wooden houses and its fairgrounds, offers countless tourist attractions. There are also plenty of cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops. Despite all this, the atmosphere of the fishing village has always been preserved. However, visit Edam with its picturesque inner city and its houses and small canals dating back to the 17th and 18th century. Remarkable here are also the Gothic Nicolai Church (15-17th century, beautiful carillon), the tourist agency housed in the old town hall (1727), the former church tower called "Spielturm" (16th century), the "Proveniershuis" (1555 ) and the City Museum (1655).
