Viviers is a small French town of 3,500 inhabitants, located on the banks of the Rhône, in the department of Ardèche. The origins of the city lie far before the Roman conquest of the country. In the 5th century, Viviers became a bishop's seat and a first cathedral was built. After being part of the Germanic Empire from the 12th to the 14th century, it goes back under French domination in 1307 and grows considerably. Within the walls two cities were distinguished: 1. the "ville haute" (upper town) with its cathedral, seat of the clergy and 2. the "ville basse", living area of the traders and artists. During the French Revolution, Viviers was fortunately saved from plunder and destruction. This is due to the protection of Bishop Charles de la Font de Savine, one of the few spiritual advocates of the revolution. Today, with its impressive historical cityscape, Viviers is a world cultural heritage.

Worth seeing is the famous Saint-Vincent Cathedral. It dates back to the 12th century but has been architecturally altered over the centuries. The religious wars in the 16th century completely destroyed the roof and domes. It was not until 1757 - 1759 that these were finally replaced by new stone domes. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with beautiful 18th-century wall rugs. The Saint-Michel Tower borders the cathedral, architecturally divided the lower quadrangular, Romanesque part, dates back to the 11th century, the upper octagonal section is Gothic and was built in the 14th century. The tower measures 40 meters, houses a Romanesque chapel and the "salle des cloches" ("bell room"), its roof platform is called "La Bramardière". Also visit the Bishop's Palace, built between 1732 and 1737, the chapel Notre-Dame-du-Rhône and the rue de la Chèvrerie, where the Jewish district was located in the Middle Ages. Take a stroll through the old town to dive into the history of the city and discover beautiful old buildings on every corner.
