St. Matthew Island is quite isolated in the Bering Sea in Alaska and is uninhabited. Especially the spectacular landscape and the animal world make this island a jewel.
In 1944, reindeer were introduced to St. Matthew (then as an emergency ration, if food was to be become short at the then existing research station), which had grown to a considerable flock by 1644, but then died out of food shortages and cold.

Especially the southern half of the island has a fantastic landscape. Here, on the Cape Upright are great cliffs, while on the east side the highest point of the island rises, the Sugarloaf Mountain. Around the island are numerous seabirds at home, including puffins.
There is also a small lake with a considerable population of salmon.
