São Jorge is located in the central group of the Azores archipelago. The first written document of the island dates back to 1439. Today, some 11,000 people live in São Jorge, 1,900 of them in the main town of Velas. Famous is the island also for its cheese, which is exported to North America. The oldest dairy in São Jorge is the Cooperativa de Leitaria da Beira.

São Jorge is the ideal Azores island for every enthusiastic hiker. As the island is hardly touristic, the partly marked hiking trails lead through a dreamy untouched mountain landscape and along imposing cliffs, passing through numerous lookouts, which offer breathtaking panoramic views over São Jorge. You can enjoy an incomparable panoramic view from the Pico de Esperanca.On a walk through Velas, you will pass stately mansions and the local church from the 17th century. The most beautiful baroque church in the Azores is the Igreja Santa Barbara in Manadas, with its wonderfully carved ceiling of cedar wood. The church tower of Urzelina offers a curious sight, the only building of the former place emerges from a thick lava layer that buried the rest of the village in 1808 during a volcanic eruption.
