Niebla, also known as Valdivia, is not only the capital of the province of Valdivia in the south of Chile, but also lies on the Valdivia River, not far from its mouth into the Pacific. As much Valdivia, the region owes its name to the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Valdivia, who named the city after himself in 1552. For several years it was a Spanish fortress in the fight against the Indians, until it was destroyed in 1575 by a very severe earthquake with subsequent landslides and flooding.
Under the Spanish manager Pedro Mariño de Lobera Valdivia was rebuilt and neglected for some time after a Spanish defeat against the Indios, until it was again settled in 1645.
I recent times Valdivia was the site of the Chilean independence war of 1818. Two years later, the city itself fell to Chile.
Valdivia experienced an important population and economic growth from 1846, after German emigrants had settled there. This is how the first beer brewery in Chile came into being.
Despite its prosperity, however, the city had not been spared by heavy blows until the present time. In 1909, a major fire deserted parts of the town and in 1960 Valdivia was hit by the world's most severe earthquake, with a subsequent tsunami, which in turn caused extreme damage.
Nevertheless, Valdivia again enjoys today a pleasant urban development. Thanks to the wooded environment, the wood processing industry plays a major role. But also other products, including food and leather goods, come from Valdivia and in the meantime beer is again brewed. In addition, Valdivia is today a university location. The "Universidad Austral de Chile" is based here.
The climate in Valdivia and its surroundings is humid throughout the year, with an increasing frequency of rainfall, particularly in winter (May - September). Temperatures usually vary between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius during this "cold" season.
