Neko Harbour / Antarctic

Neko Harbor, part of Andvord Bay, is located on the Antarctic mainland, on the Graham Coast. The name derives from the former whale ship Neko, which was set in between 1911 and 1924 in the Antarctic. In 1949 the Argentinians set up a small weather station here, which is no longer used.

Off Neko Harbour an imposing glacier calves directly into the sea. In the abandoned meteorological station a colony of gentoo penguins has its quarters today. Take a hike to the viewpoint of Neko Harbour wherefrom you not only have a wonderful view over the breathtaking Antarctic scenery, but can also listen to the crashing of the glacier front. If a piece of ice falls into the sea it causes huge waves. With a little bit of luck you can also observe seals cavorting cozily in the water.
