Monterey (approximately 30,000 inhabitants) is located in Monterey County in the federal state of California, on the famous Highway No. 1 between San Francisco and Los Angeles
The city is located on a peninsula at the southern end of Monterey Bay. In 1602, the bay was explored by Sebastián Vizcaíno who renamed, in honor of the Count of Monte Rey, the Viceroy of New Spain. Monterey was an important fishing and whaling port at the end of the 18th century and early 19th century. Of particular importance was the catching of sardines, whose processing plants were mainly located along the Cannery Row. Today, Monterey's main source of income is tourism.
