Messina, (about 260,000 inhabitants) Italian harbor town in the north-east of Sicily, capital of the province of the same name, is located on the Strait of Messina. Important industries are the food industry and shipbuilding. The university was founded in 1548. The Greeks founded the city in the 8th century BC. In 264 BC, the city turned to Rome for help, which led to the 1st Punic War between Rome and Carthage. After the rule of the Saracens in the 9th century AD and the Norman conquest in the 11th century, Messina was under the rule of different powers. After an earthquake in 1908 Messina was almost destroyed and some 70,000 people were killed.
The city is located on the Strait of Messina about 90 kilometers from Catania and about 230 kilometers from Palermo. The highest volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, lies south of Messina.
