The Malay Peninsula, whose southern part is called Malacca or Malacca Peninsula, is a long, narrow continuation of the mainland of Southeast Asia respectively the southern end of the Further India Peninsula It lies between the Gulf of Thailand in the north east, the South China Sea to the east, Johor Road to the south, Malacca to the southwest and Andaman Sea to the west. Southwest of the Malacca Strait lies the Indonesian island of Sumatra which like Borneo further to the east belongs to the Great Sunda Islands. South of the road of Johor is the island state of Singapore.Malacca was dominated by three European powers. First came the Portuguese, who were then expelled by Dutchmen. These have exchanged the country for another part of Indonesia with the English. Malaysia became independent in 1957. The same-named city of Malacca was once the most important port town on the peninsula.
