Koenigswinter is a town in the Rhineland with about 40,000 inhabitants located on the eastern side of the Rhine opposite Bonn, at the foot of the Petersberg with the imposing residence and the Dragon Rock. Both mountains are part of the nature park Seven Mountain. The name Koenigswinter arose after Charlemagne acquired a wine domain on the on Dragon Rock and thus Koenigswinter became a royal wine town. The Dragon Rock gained international fame mainly through Richard Wagner's version of the Nibelungen saga. Here Siegfried slew the legendary dragon and then bathed in his blood, to make himself invulnerable. However, a linden leaf covered a spot between his shoulder blades, a fact which later proved fatal. Thus Siegfried fate sealed in Koenigswinter on the Rhine.
