The Isle of Noss belongs to the Scottish Shetland Islands. Between 1871 and 1900 the Marquis of Londonderry had leased the island Noss to breed there Shetland ponies which he had work in his coal mines in Durham. On the only 3 km2 lived until 1939, about 25 people today Noss is uninhabited. In 1955 it was officially declared a nature reserve.
