The Houtman Abrolhos Islands are three hours away by boat west of Geraldton in Western Australia. The namegiver of the islands, Frederick de Houtman (1571 - 1627), was a Dutch researcher who in 1619 discovered this hitherto unknown landmass when he followed the Australian coast northwards near the present-day Perth.
Cruise offers to the port Houtman Abrolhos / Australia
Well known are the Houtman Abrolhos for a variety of shipwrecks that lie in the waters around the islands. The most famous case is the Batavia diminished after a mutiny in 1629. On board there were 316 people, jewels, 12 chests with silver coins as well as building materials for Batavia, today's Jakarta. The remains that have been recovered in the 1970s by divers can be visited today at the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle. The nature of the Houtman Abrolhos is impressive. For naturalists worldwide, this island is therefore also a byword: the bearded dragon (Pogona minima), for example, is only to be found on these islands.
