Hoorn / Netherlands

The Dutch city of Hoorn, located in the northwest of the province, on a promontory in the IJsselmeer, was founded in the 12th century and has today has about 68,000 residents. The town's name became world known when Willem Schouten, a sailor born in 1580 in Hoorn together with Le Maire 1615-1617 circumnavigated the southern part of Tierra del Fuego (South America) and named the archipelago after its hometown: Cape Horn.

In Hoorn many buildings from its heyday, the 17th century have been preserved, for example, the Regentur of West Friesland (now a museum) and the town scales on Rodesteen as well as the port tower (16th century) and the warehouses at the old quay. During the season runs an old steam train rides Wednesdays, Saturdays to Medemblik to the water castle. If by ship you take the route via the "Slapershaven", you can admire on the roofs of the Bossu houses the picture story about the battle at Zuiderzee.
