Henderson is one of the Pitcairn Islands, a group of islands in the southeast Pacific. The island is 10 km long, 5 km wide and is not of volcanic origin as Pitcairn, the main island of the group, but a coral reef projecting from the sea. Henderson is an uninhabited nature reserve and since 1988 a UNESCO world heritage site. The Portuguese Pedro Fernández de Quirós discovered the island on January 29, 1606 for the first time in Europe. Soon, however, the island fell into oblivion and was discovered in 1819 a second time - by James Henderson, a merchant captain of the British East India Company.
