Gudhjem, Bornholm / Denmark

The three small cosy ports, the red roofs, steep lanes, pictorial half timbered houses, curing shops, artists, galleries, working services provide for a completely special atmosphere in Gudhjems.The special light of the area and of the wonderful nature have inspired many artists. Gudhjem lies very protected due to the cliffs. The most diverse bath places, on the one hand Pengakjistan at Gudhjem, which consists exclusively of rocks, on the other hand south of Gudhjem lies the Melsted beach with rough sand. At Dueodde one finds the Østersøstrand, a beautiful, chalk-white sand beach. The landscape around Gudhjem is very hilly and offers therefore singular panoramas over the sea and the surrounding environment. Caves, grottos and torn rock formations in the water at Helligdomsklipperne in the close proximity of Gudhjem invite to exploration routes. A further natural sight is the Døndalen, lying to the northwest with a river, that forms a up to 25 m high waterfall in spring (Døndalsfaldet). In Gudhjem a large number of curing shops, galleries, potteries and glass blowing shops can be visited. The lime painting in the church Gudhjem Kirke is also worth admiring , while the Gudhjem Museum located in the old railway station shows alternating exhibitions the whole year round. A totally different experience is the Bornholm Middelaldercentret in Gudhjem. It is a historical adventure center, in the medieval city you find dwellings, a water mill, a smithery and a castle place. Furthermore, a must is the excursion to Melstedgård, south of Gudhjem, a vivid agriculture museum with houses, fields and stables.
