It was founded in 1904 as a base for whale catching and the processing thereof. Even today some remains thereof are visible, e.g. whale oil tanks. Whalers Church, a church that was brought from Norway to Grytviken in prefabricated components and was ordained on Christmas in 1913 was restored.
The place is also known for the biography of Ernest Henry Shackleton. His adventurous journey starting on Elephant Island in1916 came to an end in Grytviken. In 1922 Shackleton was buried in the cemetery in Grytviken.
Grytviken has only two permanent residents, Tim and Pauline Carr, who also run the museum with attached gift shop set in an old whaling station.
