The Galapagos Islands (Spanish: galápago means turtle) are an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean and belong to Ecuador. There are 13 major islands (Santiago, Santa Cruz, Floreana, San Cristóbal, Española, Genovesa, Santa Fe, Isabela, Fernandina, Darwin, Roca Redonda, Marchena, Pinta), 8 small islands and about 40 tiny islets. Around 19 000 people inhabit the islands.
Floreana has become known by its "post office", where today tourists still deposit their letters in old barrels as pirates dis formerly, so the one who lives closest to the recipient brings and delivers them.
