Ducie is an uninhabited, sandy atoll belonging to the archipelago of Pitcairn (named after its discoverer, the midshipman Robert Pitcairn) located in the Pacific about 5,500 km away each from New Zealand and South America. Ducie is made up of the islands of Acadia Island, Westward Island, Pandora Island and Edwards Island. Together, they have an area of about 0.7 km2. The crescent-shaped, about 3.5 km long, main island of Acadia Island is named after the British three-master Acadia, which with a wheat cargo suffered wrecked here on July 5, 1881. The anchor of the vessel was lifted in March 1990 by divers and placed together with a commemorative plaque to mark the two hundredth anniversary of the settlement of Pitcairn before the generator house. Ducie was discovered in 1606 by the Portuguese Pedro Fernandez de Quiros. As of 1867 the US claimed ownership, but the island was finally incorporated in in 1902 on command of the British consul in Tahiti into the British Empire, when a British mission ship was sent to Pitcairn and thereby also searched for the uninhabited islands.
