Cape Verde ( Portugese: Cabo Verde, geographically Cape Verde, Cape Verde Island) is an island state with nine inhabited islands in the central Atlantic Ocean, 460 kilometers off the west coast of Africa. The archipelago has an area of 4033 km². The capital of the small island republic is Praia with over 100,000 residents.The archipelago of Cape Verde is of volcanic origin. The highest peak of Cape Verde is the volcanic cone of Pico de Fogo with 2,829 m. The latest outbreak was the 1995.
The uninhabited islands were first discovered and landed on in 1456 by the Venetian Alvise Cadamosto navigating in the service of Portugal.The islands were named by the Portuguese after Cabo Verde (Green Cape) on the west coast of Africa. The Cape Verde Islands have no significant mineral resources and suffer from extremely dry Sahel climate.
