The Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean and are part of the South American state of Ecuador. They are about 965 kilometers from the mainland. The remote archipelago is of volcanic origin and consists of 14 major islands, including Isla Floreana and a variety of other tiny islands. In 1835 Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands and was inspired here for his theory of evolution.

The Galapagos Islands are one of the most important natural history regions of the world. Because of its distance from other land masses, they are characterized by a variety of endemic, that is, plant and animal species that are found nowhere else on earth, such as the Galapagos giant tortoise, the Darwin's finches or the Galapagos penguin. Unfortunately, the introduction of alien species as well as hunting in the 19th century have brought many of these unique species near extinction.
