Aasiaat is located on an island in the southern part of Disko Bay, respectively in an enchanting archipelago, which is called "the land of a thousand islands". Many conservation islands offer the opportunity to observe birds or whales, which were also the reason for the founding of Aasiaat mid-18th century.
Aasiaat (Danish .: Egedesminde) was founded in 1759 by Niels Egede, the son of the famous Christian missionary Hans Egede. That happened because they wanted to have the control of the active trade between European whalers and the people of Greenland. About 3,000 people live in Aasiaat, 200 of them in the villages of Akunaaq and Kitsissuarsuit. To Aasiaat you can get from other places of the Disko Bay and from Kangerlussuaq weekly by plane or helicopter, depending on the season also byship.

In summer humpback whales regularly emerge from the sea. The archipelago is then also a popular destination for ships or kayakers.
