First signs of settlement are already demonstrated in the Neolithic period. Continuous settlement exists since the 4th century. The first mention of Eltville, dates back to the year 1058 in the Vita Bardonis, the biography of Archbishop Bardo of Mainz.. In 1332, Emperor Louis the Bavarian conveyed Eltville city rights. From 1347 to 1480 Eltville is the residence of the archbishops of Mainz. Cologne (ital. Colonia) is the fourth largest city and the largest city of North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies on the Rhine and has one of the most important inland ports in Europe. Cologne is an important railway hub. The resaon for the economic importance of Cologne is the city's location at the intersection of the Rhine with one of the main trade routes between eastern and western Europe. As much as the Rhine has brought the city prosperity and quality of life, so feared is its flood. The current water level can be read by the "clock" of the Cologne flood marker. The name Cologne, during Roman times called Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (CCAA), goes back to the Roman empress Agrippina. The wife of Claudius was born on the Rhine and had "Agrippina Agrippinensis" built as city in the year 50 AD. During World War II, the city was destroyed more than 90%by flat bombing.
Mainz (nearly 200,000 inhabitants) is located opposite the mouth of the River Main on the Rhine, is the federal state capital and at the same time the largest city in the federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Mainz is home to a university, a diocese as well as several TV and radio stations, and sees itself as a stronghold of the Rhenish Carnival. In the downtown area as well as in individual suburbs Mainz has an increasingly metropolitan influence. In other suburbs (for example, Drais or Finthen) the village character remained largely intact. In the city center itself also many other elements of urban design have been preserved. Yet clear of the medieval and early modern cityscape reminds today's "old town" with its narrow streets and alleys around the Augustinerstraße. There are half-timbered houses even today. Large parts of the historic old town, especially north of the Ludwig Street were damaged during WWII and later demolished and modernly rebuilt.
