Alexandria is a city in the US-state Virginia, bordered by Arlington County in the north and Fairfax County in the south. The city is located at the west bank of the Pontamac River, six miles south of Washington D. C. As Alexandria is located on the opposite side of the Pontomac River, across Washington, it is the suburb of the capital, domicile for many clerks working in Washington and it houses important government buildings. Traders from Scotland arrived in Alexandria in 1710 on their Clipper ships on this piece of land years piece of land bought years ago by John Alexander in order to participate in the tobacco trade. During colonial times, Alexandria was an important trading port, especially for the cities along the Potomac River. During the War of Independence it became an important military port.
