Ålesund, Bredsund / Norway

Alesund is the pier of the Hurtigruten. In summer, the ships heading north, stop twice. Alesund was built on three rock islands. There, you meet for the first time the skerry and fjord landscape. The Aksla Mountain reveals an unforgettable view onto the city, the off-shore islands and the Sunnmöre Mountains.

From the city park, you reach on 418 steps the city mountain Aksla with the viewing point Fjellstua. From here, you have a great view onto the city Alesund, the sea with its islands and the Sunnmore Alps. In the city park there is a monument of the viking Gange-Rolv. Gange-Rolv is a direct forerunner of Wilhelm the Conqueror and thus of the English royal house. Furthermore, in the city park there is a stone memorial of emperor Wilhelm II to honour the rebuilding of the city after the fire in 1904. In the Art Nouveau Centre, the fire of 1904 and the rebuilding is presented in the Art Nouveau style. The Alesund Museum is a museum of the city history. The Sunnmore Museum is an open-air museum with old houses, boats and the viking-ship Borgundknarren. Worth seeing is also the Fishing Museum, which explains the history of the fishing town of Alesund.
Churches in Alesund:
Alesund Church, built in 1909 with nice glass-paintings.
The Borgund Church, built in 1904 on the remains of the old Peter Church from the 12th century with beautiful woodcarvings on the inside.
On the bird-island Runde in the community of Heroy live 150 residents and in summer 500,000 birds live here.
At the Artic Ocean Museum Aarvak in Brandal, the largest Arctic Ocean Museum of Norway, a seal catching ship is also on display.
