Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira; Azoren / Portugal
Angra do Heroísmo, which means as much as "bay of heroism", is a Portuguese city on the island of Terceira which is part of the Azores. Its nickname, do Heroísmo the city was awarded by Queen Maria II. Because it remained steadfast on the part of traditionalists during the Miguelist War.
The city is the oldest of the Azores, it got city rights in 1534. At the same time it became Episcopal center through Pope Paul III. Since 1976, Angra is a university town. The city is also regarded as one of the finest examples in Portugal of urban Renaissance.
