Cabrits, Dominica / Caribbean

The Dominican Cabrits peninsula lies in the eastern Caribbean. The island of Dominica, which belongs to the Cabrits, was discovered in 1493 by Columbus - on a Sunday. So he named it "Dominica", the day of the lord. Over the centuries French, English, Danish and Dutch were trying to establish their colonies here. In 1763 the island became British and so it remained until 1978. Today, the island is independent. Around the volcanic island Cabrits lies a coral reef, one of the most beautiful underwater national parks of Dominica.

The small and former capital of Dominica, Portsmouth is worth a visit. On the Indian River you can go from here on small boats through a dense and beautiful mangrove landscape. The Morne Trois National Park is located at 1,000 meters altitude: two silent mountain lakes and the Boiling Lake - the second largest boiling lake in the world - a sign that the volcanoes are not quite asleep.
Also worth seeing: the History Museum, the ruins of "Fort Shirley" and "Fort George" from the 18/19 century, the hot sulfur springs and the forest reserve "Northern Forest Reserve" with 135 different species of birds. The Norne Diablotin the highest mountain in the Caribbean - one of the few trails of the island brings you here.
