Bartalomé, San Salvador Island; Galápagos Islands / Galapagoseilanden
The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean and belong to Ecuador. There are 13 large islands, one of which is San Salvador, 8 small islands and about 40 tiny islets. Approximately 25,000 people inhabit the islands.
The Galapagos Islands were accidentally discovered by the Spaniards in 1535. The archipelago was first called Islas Encantada ("Enchanted Islands"), since no one would have suspected islands so far out in the ocean and strong currents in and around the island could easily give sailors the impression that the islands consistently changed their location.
