Atuona, HIVA OA / Grote Oceaan
The Marquesas Islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and are part of French Polynesia. To them belongs the island Hiva Oa, the largest island in the southern group. Scenically this island is characterized by a mountain range, which stretches across the island. The island is known due to the painter Paul Gaugin, who came here when he was no longer feeling well in Tahiti.
The greatest village of the island is Atuona. It lies in the south on a bay, which is a natural harbor.
