Akutan IJsland, Aleoeten / Alaska (VS)
The Aleutian Islands are a very mysterious island chain at the edge of the world. The city Akutan on the same-named eastern Aleutian Island was founded in 1878 as a fur storage and trading port for the Western Fur & Trading Company. Between 1912 and 1942 Akutan was whaling station in the Aleutians. Commercial fishing and the processing of fish dominate the Akutans economy.
Ships and amphibious aircraft are the only means of transportation to Akutan. Cargo is delivered weekly by cargo ships from Seattle.
In winter there are frequent storms and in summer fog is not uncommon.
